It's Different Now How Can a Doll be an Agent of Transformation |
Abstract
This dissertation consists of an extract from a novel in progress, It’s Different Now, along with its companion, a critical examination of the doll as an agent of transformation. Within the fiction, the reader enters an herbal apothecary where four women are at work, making dolls that change the world. Here is the story of how they began the journey together, the foes they outwitted, and the friends that helped them, both human and from the spirit world. Acknowledgements Sincere gratitude towards my tutors, Dr. Beatrice Hitchman and Dr. Martin Randall, as well as to Joseph Kertes and Anne Ireland for their support in continuing the writing process earlier on. Many thanks to dollmaker Sharon Riley for sharing the inner world of her dollmaking, to Barb Kobe and Anne Heck, who consented to be interviewed to discuss the evolution of their dollmaking processes. I also thank my dog, Harry, who is a great companion for a writer. |
